Sixty-four regional high school winners attended the DOE National “Science Bowl” held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center located just outside of Washington, D.C. this past weekend, with the finals being played in the Lisner Auditorium of George Washington University on Monday. The teams were divided into eight pools, with every team in each pool playing one another. Three of the Marshfield High School team’s games went down to the very last question, and unfortunately the Tiger team came up short in two of them. They ended the day with 4-3 record, but failed to advance to the sixteen-team double-elimination bracket. The Midwest did prevail, however, as Wayzata, Minnesota went on to win the high school division.
In addition to the academic competition, students had the opportunity to attend presentations by well-known scientists on current topics in math and the sciences. They also had time for a night tour of the monuments as well as a day tour to explore the many museums on the National Mall.
