Standards-based Teaching and Learning

What is Standards-Based Teaching & Learning?

At its core, Standards-Based Teaching and Learning (SBTL) is about ensuring all students learn what they need to know, at the level they need to know it. Instead of focusing on points or letter grades, the emphasis is placed on what students are learning and how well they understand it.

In the School District of Marshfield, this means students are guided by clear academic standards—expectations set by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) that describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Teachers use these standards to plan instruction, assess learning, and give meaningful feedback.

How It Works in the Classroom

Teachers:

  • Use Wisconsin Academic Standards as a roadmap to guide instruction.
  • Plan lessons around clear, student-friendly learning targets.
  • Provide multiple opportunities for students to practice, reflect, and revise.
  • Measure student understanding based on how well each standard is met, not on point accumulation.

Students:

  • Know exactly what they're expected to learn and why it matters.
  • Understand how their progress is measured and what success looks like.
  • Are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through reflection and improvement.

Why It Matters for Your Child

Standards-based learning helps families and educators work together toward shared goals:

Clarity

Families can clearly see what their child is working toward and what success looks like

Feedback that Matters

Your child receives feedback on specific skills and concepts not just a letter grade.

Growth Focused

Students are supported to grow from where they are—not compared to others.

How You Can Support at Home

  • Talk with your child about what they’re learning, not just what grade they got.

  • Ask for clarity on what specific skills are being assessed.

  • Encourage a growth mindset: "You're still learning this" is just as valuable as "You got it!"
